Importance of compassion — 5 thoughts on bedside manner

With healthcare transitioning to value-based care, a physician's bedside manner is increasingly important and many healthcare facilities are taking measures to enhance their physicians' communication with patients, according to CNN.

Here are five points:

1. Medical systems including the University of Michigan and the Cleveland Clinic are using some techniques to incite physicians to be more responsive to patients. Tim Vogus, an associate professor of management at Vanderbilt University, found hospitals that encourage compassions are more likely to have higher patient satisfaction scores.

2. Some medical schools such as Duke University are mandating that select residents take courses to help them be empathetic towards patients.

3. Various medical organizations encourage their physicians to write down personal details about their patients in their medical charts so they can converse about various topics.

4. Patient feedback is essential so medical professionals know what works and what they can change in their medical practice. A physician who never hears feedback about not being empathetic will see no reason to adjust behavior.

5. Patients are more prone to take their medications and adhere to recommendations if they feel their physician cares.
