Which ASC company has grown the most in 2017?

ASC companies are continuing to expand, acquiring centers and partnering with physicians on de novo ASCs. Here is a snapshot of company growth over the past eight months for seven ASC companies.

Note: Totals include the ASCs that have opened in 2017 and centers expected to open through the end of the year. Exact numbers were not available for all ASC companies.

SurgCenter Development (25)
In February, SurgCenter Development opened its 100th center: Grand Rapids (Mich.) Surgical Suites. The company now has 105 centers after signing on 17 new de novo centers and licensing eight ASCs this year. SurgCenter Development centers focus on orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology and occuloplastics. The company's facilities treat more than 190,000 patients annually and provided around 7,000 joint replacements in 2016.

Physicians Endoscopy (17)
Physicians Endoscopy has added 17 centers so far in 2017, three of which are currently under development. The GI-focused chain has 58 centers under its belt with 55 currently open and operational. In April, Frontier Healthcare became part of Physicians Endoscopy, which has partnerships with more than 550 gastroenterologists who perform more than 490,000 procedures annually.

Surgical Care Affiliates (9)
Six ASCs have joined Surgical Care Affiliates' network so far in 2017, and the company developed two de novo centers with a third expected to open before the end of the year. In January, UnitedHealth Group announced plans to acquired Surgical Care Affiliates, then a 205-center company, for $2.3 billion and combine the company with UnitedHealth Group's OptumCare business.

AmSurg (6)*
As of June 30, AmSurg added six new ASCs, bringing itstotal number of centers to 263. The company, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in April, merged with Envision Healthcare in December 2016. AmSurg physicians have performed more than 12 million procedures over the past decade and currently have partnerships with more than 2,000 physicians.

Regent Surgical Health (3)
Regent Surgical Health worked with physician partners to open Surgery Center of Wasilla (Alaska) and Mt. Pleasant (Pa.) Surgery Center in 2017, and plans to open East Hills (N.Y.) Surgery Center over the next few weeks. Once East Hills is open, Regent will have 23 surgery centers across the country.

United Surgical Partners International/Tenet: (3)*
As of June 30, United Surgical Partners International and Tenet had around 460 outpatient centers, including three ASCs added during the first half of the year. In the second quarter of 2017, USPI and Tenet reported 2.8 percent increase in ambulatory segment revenue but 0.5 percent decrease in ambulatory cases.

Surgery Partners
Surgery Partners reported 103 surgical facilities as of June 30, and completed its $760 million acquisition of National Surgical Healthcare in August to bring the company's surgical facility ownership count to around 125 facilities across 32 states. Surgery Partners' network includes around 5,000 physicians as well as surgical hospital, diagnostic laboratory, multispecialty physician practice and urgent care facility locations.
