34 Hospitals & Health Systems Planning, Opening ASCs in 2014

Here are 34 hospitals and health systems that have announce plans for or opened ambulatory surgery centers in 2014 thus far.

Advocate Christ Medical Center
 in Oak Lawn, Ill., opened its $202 million outpatient facility at the end of March. The facility includes 12 operating rooms and seven GI/endoscopy procedure areas.

Aurora Health Care plans to break ground on an ambulatory surgery center just outside of Burlington, Wis., next year. The surgery center is expected to open in 2016.

CHI St. Luke's Health announced plans for a $110 million facility in The Woodlands, Texas. The facility will include a 55,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center and a 100,000-square-foot medical office building.

Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, N.Y., recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its minimally invasive women's health surgery center.

Columbus (Wis.) Community Hospital broke ground on an $18.6 million expansion, including a surgery center. The surgery center is the first phase of the expansion.

Community Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., will soon open its Canyon View Surgery Center at the Canyon View Medical Plaza.  

Eastern Niagara Hospital broke ground on its Lockport, N.Y., ambulatory surgery center in January. The $3 million project is expected to reach completion in the summer.

East Tennessee Children's Hospital in Knoxville plans to begin a $75 million expansion project, which includes a new surgery center.

Florida International University and Miami Children's Hospital recently partnered to open a 36,000-square-foot pediatric outpatient surgery facility. The new center is expected to open on the FIU campus in January 2015.

Hennepin County Medical Center is developing a $191 million clinic and specialty center in Minneapolis. The new facility will offer outpatient surgery and specialty care.

Hospital of Central Connecticut, based in Southington, is awaiting state approval to open an orthopedics-focused ambulatory surgery center at its Bradley Memorial campus.

Jefferson Hospital, part of the Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network, has broken ground on its $17 million addition to its Bethel Park, Pa., outpatient facility. Scheduled to be complete in early 2015, the addition will feature three operating rooms, two gastrointestinal procedure rooms, a medical oncology suite and physician offices.

The Joint Township District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary presented the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, Ohio with a $15,000 check for a new ambulatory surgery center.

Lehigh Valley Health Network opened LVHN Surgical Center at the former Westfield Hospital in South Whitehall Township, Pa. The surgery center will focus on orthopedics.

Massac Memorial Hospital and the Orthopedic Institute of Western Kentucky plan to open an outpatient orthopedic and podiatric surgery center in Metropolis, Ill.

McLaren Bay Region in Bay City, Mich., purchased nine acres of land, which will serve as the site of a new facility housing an ambulatory surgery center.

Metro Health has completed its new ambulatory surgery center at the Metro Health Park East location in Grand Rapids, Mich. Metro Health held an open house for its surgery center on Jan. 14.

NYU Lagone Medical Center
recently proposed a 60,000-square-foot medical building that would include an ambulatory surgery center.

OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital began construction on a new surgery center and medical office building, which is expected to reach completion in 2015.

Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, N.J., began construction on a 57,000-square-foot ambulatory care center, which will offer endoscopy, gastroenterology, orthopedics and cardiology services.

Park Nicollet Health Services plans to spend $48 million on a new, 115,000-square-foot outpatient center next to its existing clinic in Maple Grove, Minn. The existing clinic will be converted into a surgery and endoscopy center.

Providence Health & Services, Regent Surgical Health and a group of local physicians opened the joint venture Plaza Ambulatory Surgery Center in Portland, Ore.

Rex Healthcare, based in Raleigh, N.C., plans to recruit 20 to 30 surgeons for a joint venture ambulatory surgery center. Rex Healthcare, a subsidiary of UNC Healthcare already operates two similar projects in the state.

As part of a $172 million renovation project, St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill., will open a new surgery center in June.

St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor (Mich.) Hospital opened its new, 43,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center. The new facility consolidates the hospital's orthopedic and non-orthopedic outpatient centers.

St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, Ind., has broken ground on a $40 million facility that will house a surgery center and intensive care unit. The surgery center will take up 11,300 square feet of the new facility. Construction is estimated to reach completion in summer 2015.

South Florida Hospital in Plant City is planning a $5.8 million expansion and renovation of its surgery center. The project will add two operating rooms, increasing the total number of ORs to seven.

Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton, Okla., has broken ground on a 10,000-square-foot, $4.5 million surgery center. The Surgery Center of Southwestern Medical Center is expected to open by July or August.

Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth Town, N.J., opened a new ambulatory surgery center in January.

The University of Maryland Medical System plans to break ground on the $7 million Surgery Center at Queenstown (Md.) in July.

The University of Miami Health plans to break ground on a 200,000-square-foot ambulatory care center in Coral Gables, Fla. Physicians from Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the health system's core specialty facilities, will now work in Coral Gables.

University of Minnesota Health broke ground on a $160.5 million outpatient facility in Minneapolis. The facility will include an outpatient surgery center and various clinics.

The University of Rochester Medical Center has received certificate of need approval for an ambulatory surgery center in Brockport, N.Y.

The Veterans Affairs Clinic in Billings, Mont., has expansion plans, including a new outpatient surgery center. Once the expansion is complete, the facility is expected to provide care for 11,000 veterans in Montana and 10,000 veterans in Wyoming.
