Study: Dentist Anesthesiologists Contribute Much to Research

Dentist anesthesiologists produce 10 percent of anesthesia research related to dentistry, though they represent only 1.5 percent of dentists who actively contribute to anesthesia research, according to a study published in Anesthesia Progress.

The authors searched the medical literature analysis and online retrieval system, SI Web of Knowledge and Ovid Cochrane reviews for articles related to anesthesia that had dentistry as a key word. Their search method for articles could include physician research that used dental models and could exclude dentists' research that did not specifically relate to dentistry.

The authors found 3,709 articles, 377 of which were authored or co-authored by dentist anesthesiologists, despite the lack of recognized anesthesiology departments in dental schools. Furthermore, the amount of research produced by dentist anesthesiologists was not significantly different from that of the six clinically-oriented specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
