Prescription Sales Through Primary Healthcare Distributors Reached $268 billion

According to the 2011–2012 HDMA Factbook, prescription sales through primary healthcare distributors reached $268 billion in 2010 and represented 87 percent of all pharmaceutical sales in the country, a Center for Healthcare Supply Chain Research news release said.

The report also said 98 percent of wholesale distributors' net sales came from pharmaceutical product distribution, but the product mix is shifting. Branded pharmaceutical sales have decreased to 76 percent, but branded specialty pharmaceutical products increased to 13.5 percent of those sales.

The report also found generic drug sales are up eight percent from 2009, and they now represent 8.3 percent of total distributor sales.
