Wisconsin to Review Health Insurance Rates for First Time

As of last month, health insurance rates in Wisconsin will come under scrutiny for the first time, according to a JS Online report.

Wisconsin is among the states that have not regulated or tracked health insurance rates. Health insurers must file their rates with the state's regulators only when they go into effect or soon after, and rate increases are presumed reasonable as long as marketplace competition exists.

Under federal healthcare reform, states or the federal government will review rate increases considered "unreasonable" — initially defined as 10 percent or more — for people who buy insurance as individuals and for employers with 50 or fewer employees.

The federal government has given the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance a $5 million grant to hire additional staff and implement a process for reviewing rate increases.
