Deadline Passes for Illinois Workers to Choose Health Insurance Plans

Illinois state employees and retirees who had yet to select an insurance plan or wanted to change an earlier selection were required to make their decisions by Monday at 5 p.m., according to a Pantagraph report.

According to Januari Smith, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Healthcare & Family Services, the department's phone lines are still tied up addressing concerns from members.

The state originally planned to eliminate Health Alliance and Humana, two popular state employee HMOs, from the list of available plans. A compromise reached late last week extended the selection deadline from Friday to Monday and prompted the creation of 90-day health plans, effective June 1, to let the state enter into emergency contracts with healthcare providers to cover workers and retirees as the litigation process continues.

Humana did not come to terms for a 90-day contract, unlike Health Alliance and most other insurers. Humana members who did not choose a new plan by the Monday deadline were placed into Quality Care Health Plan administered by CIGNA.
