Anesthesiologist Tasks Colleagues With Peri-Operative Improvement in 2011

Anesthesiologists have a responsibility to improve the peri-operative period and increase the volume of anesthesiology research, according to an editorial published in Anesthesiology and written by James C. Eisenach, MD, of the department of anesthesiology and physiology and pharmacology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

Dr. Eisenach said despite the relatively low OR mortality rate, the peri-operative period remains "fraught with significant and long-lasted morbidity and mortality," according to the editorial.

Anesthesiologists may also have to defend their practice as a technical art requiring the rigorous training of physicians in the coming years, he added.
