10 golden rules for ASC administrators

The ASC administrator role requires a comprehensive skill set, according to Simplify ASC, a surgery center management platform company.

Simplify ASC's Deedee Dalke shared 10 things effective ASC administrators do:

1. Thoroughly read and understand Appendix L in CMS' "Guide for Surveyors: Ambulatory Surgery Centers."

2. Pursue accreditation and certification for leverage in payer contract negotiations and to give the ASC a competitive edge.

3. Continuously improve scheduling and automate the entire process, including block scheduling, customized reporting and scheduler communication.

4. Remain vigilant about managing supply chain expenses, using tools such as inventory management software.

5. Use the Eisenhower decision-making matrix to prioritize tasks.

6. Clearly outline priorities and plans to achieve them.

7. Run efficient meetings by creating an agenda, staying on topic, and starting and ending on time.

8. Build a culture of trust and respect, never missing a chance to show employees they're appreciated.

9. Always be recruiting.

10. Have a willingness to learn, improve and celebrate successes.
