20 US regions with the most & least medical debt

An Urban Institute study examined state's past due medical debt in adults ages 18 to 64 from 2012 to 2015.

Here are the 10 states with the most medical debt and the percent change that debt changed from 2012 to 2015:

1. Mississippi

  • Percent of medical debt: 37.4 percent
  • Percent change: -23.8 percent

2. Arkansas

  • Percent of medical debt: 36.3 percent
  • Percent change: -9.8 percent

3. West Virginia

  • Percent of medical debt: 33 percent
  • Percent change: -12.1 percent

4. Indiana

  • Percent of medical debt: 32.5 percent
  • Percent change: -0.6 percent

5. South Carolina

  • Percent of medical debt: 32.4 percent
  • Percent change: -11.9 percent

6. Kentucky

  • Percent of medical debt: 30.9 percent
  • Percent change: -26.7 percent

7. Missouri

  • Percent of medical debt: 30.6 percent
  • Percent change: -11.3 percent

8. Oklahoma

  • Percent of medical debt: 30 percent
  • Percent change: -21 percent

9. Alabama

  • Percent of medical debt: 30 percent
  • Percent change: -10 percent

10. Georgia

  • Percent of medical debt: 29.2 percent
  • Percent change: -5.9 percent

2. Minnesota

  • Percent of medical debt: 13.3 percent

3. California

  • Percent of medical debt: 16 percent
  • Percent change: -2.6 percent

4. Massachusetts

  • Percent of medical debt: 16.1 percent
  • Percent change: -20.2 percent

5. Connecticut

  • Percent of medical debt: 16.3 percent
  • Percent change: -38.4 percent

6. Washington, D.C.

  • Percent of medical debt: 18.1 percent
  • Percent change: -18.2 percent

7. Utah

  • Percent of medical debt: 18.2 percent
  • Percent change: -28.5 percent

8. Maryland

  • Percent of medical debt: 18.6 percent
  • Percent change: -25 percent

9. New York
