Ethicon Introduces New Devices for Minimally Invasive Hernia Repair

Ethicon has announced the launch of two new products in its hernia solutions portfolio —the ETHICON SECURESTRAP 5mm Absorbable Strap Fixation Device and ETHICON PHYSIOMESH Flexible Composite Mesh.

ETHICON SECURESTRAP offers two points of fixation to straddle mesh pores and fibers including large-pore constructions, and secure mesh fixation during the tissue integration period. The low profile of the product, the first fixation device to feature an absorbable "strap" design, can help minimize a patient's exposure to foreign material on the internal organs, according to a news release.

ETHICON PHYSIOMESH is a lightweight and partially-absorbable polypropylene mesh which stretches to closely match the abdominal wall, according to the release. The product features large pore construction and a poliglecaprone 25 transparent film.

Hernia repair procedures are the sixth most common outpatient surgery in the United States.

"Hernias are extremely common with more than one million Americans undergoing a hernia repair procedure every year," said Carl R. Doerhoff, MD, FACS, a practicing surgeon in Jefferson City, Mo., and paid consultant to Ethicon. "Within the last five years we have seen tremendous innovations that advance the science of hernia repair and help our patients achieve optimal results."
