AAPC Launches Practice Management Initiative

The American Academy of Professional Coders has launched a practice management initiative to help physician practices improve the efficiency and accuracy of their business practices and claims submissions, according to a release by the AAPC.

As part of the initiative, the AAPC is developing a virtual training program that will simulate a physician office environment for various specialties. Participants in the program will be trained in multiple positions within a practice and will assume a job in the virtual practice, submitting their work to be measured for accuracy and efficiency, according to the release. In addition, AAPC will develop curriculum, testing and credentials for non-clinical positions in the practice.

"Today's healthcare system is changing so quickly, and so must the roles of physician practice employees, making it crucial to have the best processes, knowledge, training and skills necessary to manage a medical practice," Reed Pew, CEO and president of AAPC, said in the release. "Over the next year we will begin providing practice managers, coders, billers and others with a set of tools and initiatives to continuously improve the business side of the practice."
