Physicians have been denied claims for using a Kalypto Medical negative pressure wound therapy pump because they were unaware that a contractor assigned it a miscellaneous Medicare code, according to a Star Tribune report.
This coding reverses a 2009 statement by CMS that one billing code is appropriate for all the negative pressure wound products on the market. As a result of the coding change, demand for the product has also declined.
Kalypto Medical has appealed to CMS to receive a new or revised code, but the process could take up to two years. This delay could damage the company's viability and physicians' ability to correctly code and receive reimbursement for use of the product, according to the report.
