University of Virginia's Pain Center Continues Pioneering Tradition

The Division of Pain Medicine and its Pain Management Center at the University of Virginia continues to advance the pain management specialty, continuing a tradition started by anesthesiologist Harold Carron, MD, in 1970, according to a Pain Medicine News report.

Under the auspices of the university's department of anesthesiology, the division treats patients of all ages for acute, chronic and cancer pain and tailors treatment plans to meet patients' individual needs. The institution received the American Pain Society's Center of Excellence Award in 2009.

According to the report, the division treats pain using a psychosocial approach, which takes into account physical, social and psychological factors. The physicians look at the mental and social factors that could contribute to pain rather than simply concentrating on anatomy.

The pain management center was established in 1970 by Dr. Carron, who was a pioneer in pain management. The center represented one of the first multidisciplinary clinics for treating pain.
