Safety Enhanced Disposal Device Could Prevent Needlestick-, Sharps-Related Injuries

A study published in the American Journal of Infection Control and presented at the 36th APIC Annual Education Conference found a safety feature-enhanced needle disposal device aided in significant reductions in sharps injuries, according to the study's abstract.

From 2006-2008, researchers examined the impact of conversion to a sharps container with enhanced engineering on sharps injury categories in 14 hospitals. The device's safety features included large horizontal aperture, sensitive counterbalanced door, large atrium and passive overfill prevention. The study group results were compared to a control group of 14 other hospitals.

Results showed using the device reduced post-procedure sharps injuries by 30 percent, disposal-related sharps injuries by 57 percent and contained-associated sharps injuries by 81 percent. Hospitals using the safety-enhanced device had significantly fewer total sharps injuries than control hospitals.
