At least 39 ASCs opened, broke ground or were announced in the first quarter of 2026, with activity concentrated in the South and Midwest.
Florida and Michigan led all states with multiple new facilities each and orthopedic and musculoskeletal care dominated the new openings. Additionally, several major health systems, including Mass General Brigham, Northwell Health and Intermountain Health, expanded their ASC footprints through joint ventures and standalone facilities.
Arkansas
- Little Rock-based Ortho Arkansas began construction on a new ASC. The more than 47,000-square-foot center will include 10 operating rooms, 20 per-operative bays, 20 post-anesthesia care unit recovery bays and three overnight stay rooms.
- Jonesboro-based St. Bernards Healthcare opened its new Hand & Wrist Center on Jan. 15.
California
- Orange-based UCI Health opened an outpatient ophthalmology center in Brea.
- DISC Surgery Center at Tarzana opened Jan. 20.
- Sutter Health broke ground on a new Advanced Cancer Center and Care Complex in Modesto.
- A planning commission recommended approval for Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente’s plan to build a new ASC and medical office building.
Colorado
- Colorado Springs-based Vanguard Skin Specialists began construction on a 9,000-square-foot expansion of its Pueblo location that will include a new ASC and specialty suites.
Florida
- Tampa General Hospital and Boston-based Mass General Brigham launched a joint venture partnership to expand access to outpatient services in Florida, starting with a radiation oncology center that is set to open in Palm Beach Gardens later this year.
- Borland Groover broke ground on Emerald Coast Endoscopy Center, a new outpatient clinic and ASC in Santa Rosa Beach.
- Ascension St. Vincent’s and Southeast Orthopedic Specialists, both in Jacksonville. opened an ASC in St. Augustine.
- Port St. Lucie-based Florida Coast Medical Center announced plans to expand its outpatient capabilities with an ASC later in 2026. 17. Jacksonville-based Southeast Orthopedic Specialists opened a new ASC in St. Augustine, expanding access to musculoskeletal care in the region.
Idaho
- Kootenai Health and MultiCare are set to break ground on a medical campus with an ASC. The Prairie Medical Campus in Post Falls, Idaho, will include a medical office building with an ASC, clinical offices, lab services and cardiology care.
Indiana
- Princeton-based Deaconess Gibson Hospital reopened a renovated outpatient procedure center near its hospital campus. The center includes two operating rooms and was originally constructed as an outpatient surgery center by Princeton Surgery Center, a group of 11 physicians.
Iowa
- Bettendorf-based ORA Orthopedic cut the ribbon on a 113,000-square-foot medical facility and administrative headquarters.
Maryland
- A group of nine founding orthopedic surgeons opened an ASC in Gaithersburg.
Massachusetts
- Mass General Brigham received approval for an endoscopy-focused ASC in Cambridge. The state’s Public Health Council green lit a 6,095-square-foot facility which will include three procedure rooms and 10 pre- and post-operative bays.
- Attleboro-based plans to build a single-specialty orthopedic ASC as part of its joint venture with University Orthopedics.
Michigan
- Saginaw-based Covenant HealthCare announced its plans to break ground on a $25 million orthopedic ASC in April.
- Lansing-based UM Health-Sparrow plans to build a $60 million ASC. The project is part of a broader expansion that also includes an $83 million behavioral health hospital. Both facilities are expected to break ground this summer and open in 2028.
- Traverse City-based Munson Healthcare opened a new ASC in Gaylord.
Mississippi
- The Jackson-based University of Mississippi Medical Center opened Colony Park North, a hospital outpatient facility designed to expand access to specialty care and same-day surgery in Ridgeland and the surrounding area.
New York
- New York state approved demolition of a condemned parking garage at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, a step in advancing a planned $1.1 billion campus overhaul that includes building an ASC.
- New Hyde Park-based Northwell Health’s Peconic Bay Medical Center opened a new $5 million women’s multispecialty center in Manorville.
- New York City-based NYU Langone Health opened a new ambulatory and radiology practice location in Riverhead.
- The Guthrie Clinic opened an outpatient orthopedic and spine surgery center in Johnson City, expanding access to advanced musculoskeletal care in the area.
North Carolina
- Durham-based Duke University Health System submitted a CON application to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for a new ASC.
Oregon
- Capital Surgical Solutions announced plans to open a new ASC in Portland in the fourth quarter of 2026.
South Carolina
- Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health and Clemson (S.C.) University broke ground on a 90,000-square-foot medical facility that will include an ASC.
- Novant Health announced plans to open four new clinics in Summerville, S.C. Team members held a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 5 with the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. The clinics will offer OB-GYN services, general surgery, bariatrics, maternal-fetal medicine and primary care.
Tennessee
- Johnson City Eye Surgery Center held a ribbon-cutting to celebrate its opening Jan. 15.
Texas
- Austin Regional Clinic opened a new location in Round Rock. ARC Greenlaw Specialty includes 17 exam rooms, three procedure rooms, an onsite lab and radiology services.
- Methodist Richardson Medical Center opened a new ASC.
- Ketan Sukkawala, DDS, a pediatric dentist in College Station, Texas, filed a CON application for a dental ambulatory surgery center in Hartford, Conn. The ASC will specialize in general dentistry and oral surgery under general anesthesia for pediatric and special needs patients.
- Dental supply company Henry Schein opened a training facility for dental-medical integration in Southlake that includes an ASC site.
Utah
- Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Health opened an ambulatory endoscopy center in Ogden.
Virginia
- Richmond Heart and Vascular Associates plans to open a new, $4 million 27,000-square-foot office in Chesterfield in July 2027.
West Virginia
- WVU Medicine United Hospital Center in Bridgeport broke ground on a 62,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center.
Wisconsin
- Madison-based Orthopedic & Spine Centers of Wisconsin cut the ribbon on a new ASC on Feb. 18.
