Mederi's Stretta Therapy for GERD receives strong recommendation: 4 insights

The Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons gave Mederi Therapeutics' Stretta Therapy for GERD a strong recommendation in a new clinical spotlight review guideline statement.

Here's what you should know.

1. The professional society uses existing data to make recommendations on the treatment's potential.

2. The society wrote in the clinical spotlight review, "Based on existing evidence, Stretta significantly improves health related quality of life scores, heartburn scores, incidence of esophagitis, and esophageal acid exposure in patients with GERD.

3. On Stretta's effectiveness and safety, the society wrote, "The effectiveness of Stretta diminishes some over time, but persistent effects have been described for up to 10 years in appropriately selected GERD patients. Stretta is more effective than PPI, but less so than fundoplication. Stretta is safe in adults and has a short learning curve."

4. Past SAGES President SAGES Brian Dunkin, MD, said Stretta is an alternative option for GERD treatment between medication and surgery. He said it "is an attractive alternative to patients, physicians and payers alike."
