15+ ophthalmology-focused ASCs to know

Ophthalmology is one of the big three specialties in the ASC arena, along with gastroenterology and orthopedics. Becker's ASC Review compiled a list of ophthalmology centers to know. To add a center to this list, email Eric Oliver at eoliver@beckershealthcare.com.

Note: This list is presented alphabetically.    

Azar Surgery Center (Salisbury, Md.). The Azar Surgery Center functions as the procedure center for Salisbury-based Azar Eye Institute. The center performs cataract, glaucoma and blepharoplasty surgery among similar procedures. Alex Azar, MD, formed the practice and surgery center. Six physicians practice out of the center.

Baltimore Eye Surgical Center. Baltimore Eye Physicians own and operate the Baltimore Eye Surgery Center. The center's physicians specializes in performing restor lens, toric lens, LenSx, YAG PC Laser and PL laser surgeries.

CarlinVision Surgery Center (Snellville, Ga.) CarlinVision Surgery Center, a single specialty ophthalmology surgery center, was founded by Richard Carlin, MD, in 2011. The center is an affiliate of CarlinVision, Dr. Carlin's practice he founded in 1977, and includes four other providers on staff.

Community Hospital’s ASC (Munster, Ind.). Community Hospital is a multispecialty ASC serving Munster, Ind., and its surrounding communities. The center is known for its cooperation between nursing, anesthesiology and administrative staffs, and can accommodate a high volume of cases. The center performs several procedures including ophthalmology.

Commonwealth Eye Surgery (Lexington, Ky.). Commonwealth Eye Surgery was Kentucky's first optometric comanagement center. The six providers practicing out of the center provide a variety of services including cataract surgery, laser surgery and LASIK surgery. The center has defined core values including: integrity, accuracy and safety.

Columbus (Ohio) Eye Surgery Center. The Columbus Eye Surgery Center opened in 1996 and continues to diligently serve the people of Columbus. Formed by Richard Orlando, MD, Robin Beran, MD, and Robert Bruce, MD, the center was the first-of-its-kind in Central Ohio. The center was designated as a cataract innovator by YourSightMatters.com, recognized as one of "finest examples of outpatient eye care in the country."

The Eye Center of Columbus (Ohio). The Eye Center of Columbus is among the largest ophthalmology-based surgery centers in the Columbus area. The 25,000-square-foot ASC has eight operating rooms and three laser rooms. With 60-certified surgeons on staff, the center estimates it will perform 12,000 cases in 2017. The ASC specializes in ophthalmology retina, cataract, oculoplastics, cornea, glaucoma, strabismus and refractive procedures.

Eye Surgery Center of Michigan (Troy, Mich.). The physician-designed Eye Surgery Center of Michigan was developed through a partnership with Brighton, Mich.-based St. John Health. Four different practices utilized the Eye Surgery Center of Michigan: Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Grosinger, Spigelman & Grey Eye Surgeons; Southfield, Mich.-based Glaucoma Center of Michigan; Warren, Mich.-based Cataract and Eye Consultants of Michigan; and the Troy, Mich.-based Greenberg Laser Eye Center.

Illinois Eye Center (Peoria). Two locations, 16 providers, an optical boutique and med spa make up the Illinois Eye Center. The institute's Pete Lagouros, MD, and Patrick Rhode, MD, were both named to Best Doctors' Best Doctors in America List for 2017-18. The center is an active participant in clinical trials including one for macular degeneration.

New Vision Cataract Center (Norwalk, Conn.). The New Vision Cataract Center is part of Norwalk-based Spector Eye Care. The center offers laser cataract surgery, traditional cataract surgery and lens implant surgery. Both centers were founded by Scott Spector, MD, who serves as medical director, and include four other physicians.

Northern Virginia Eye Surgery Center (Fairfax). Twenty-four providers make up the AAAHC-accredited Fairfax-based Northern Virginia Eye Surgery Center. John Essepian, MD, and David Forster, MD, serve as co-medical directors at the center. SPH Analytics awarded the center its Apex Quality Award for 2014 and 2015.

Ocala (Fla.) Eye Surgery Center. Since opening in 1971, Ocala (Fla.) Eye Surgery Center has blossomed into the largest eye care practice in North Central Florida. The practice has 15 providers and has partnered with several central Florida pathology laboratories to handle its pathology needs.

The Eye Center (Eugene, Ore.). Physicians from The Eye Center and its three practices across Oregon perform surgeries at the Oregon Eye Surgery Center in Eugene. John Haines, MD, and Kent Karren, MD, are the practices' main physicians.

Santa Barbara (Calif.) Surgery Center. Since 2001, Santa Barbara Surgery Center has served Central California and its surrounding communities. The AAAHC-accredited surgery center includes members of both the California Ambulatory Surgery Association and the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.

Virginia Eye Institute (Richmond, Va.). Founded in 1976, the Virginia Eye Institute is one of the oldest and largest ophthalmology practices in the state. The practice has 30 providers consisting of ophthalmologists, optometrist and an orthoptist.

Winchester (Va.) Eye Surgery Center. The first single specialty ophthalmic surgery center in Winchester provides its patients cataract, corneal, oculoplastic, glaucoma and general ophthalmology procedures. The center has five physicians with Frank Reuling, MD, serving as medical director.
