10 New Surgery Centers Opened or Announced in April

Here are 10 new surgery centers that were opened or announced in April.

1. Wauwatosa, Wis. — Aurora Health Care to Open New ASC
Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care is set to open a new ambulatory surgery center in Wauwatosa, Wis. Aurora, which invested about $18.5 million in the facility, will be the sole tenant and lease the center. It will offer orthopedics, GI and other specialties, according to the report.

2. Munster, Ind. — Franciscan Alliance to Convert Surgical Hospital of Munster to ASC
The Franciscan Alliance, a multi-state Catholic health system based in, Mishawaka, Ind., has acquired the Surgical Hospital of Munster (Ind.) to serve as an ambulatory surgery center. The Franciscan Alliance, which has 13 hospitals in Indiana and Illinois, acquired the surgical hospital April 14 as part of the health system's plan to become an accountable care organization.

3. Vero Beach, Fla. — New Opthalmology Center to Open in June
A new ophthalmology surgical center is expected to open in Vera Beach, Fla., in June. The 6,500-square-foot surgery center is included in a new 19,000-square-foot facility, which also includes clinical space for four ophthalmologists.

4. Grayslake, Ill. — Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital to Open Outpatient Surgery Center
Northwestern Lake Forest (Ill.) Hospital is set to open a new outpatient surgery center in Grayslake. The surgery center is included in a $49 million, 70,900-square-foot expansion of the hospital's Grayslake campus.

5. Honolulu, Hawaii — MIS Endoscopy to Build New Ambulatory Surgery Center
A group of physicians have applied for a certificate of need to build a new ambulatory surgery center specializing in endoscopy in Honolulu. The group, MIS Endoscopy, hopes to build a $5.4 million ASC.

6. Tallahassee, Fla. — Tallahassee Memorial and Local Physicians Open Joint Venture ASC
The Red Hills Surgical Center, a joint-venture ambulatory surgery center between Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and 35 local physicians, has opened. The ASC is a 17,000-square-foot multi-specialty facility which features five operating rooms.

7. Dallas, Texas — Minimally Invasive Spine Institute Opens New ASC
Minimally Invasive Spine Institute has announced the opening of a new ambulatory surgery center and outpatient clinic at the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute Health Campus in Dallas. The 48,000-square-foot MSI Surgery Center features four operating rooms and one minor procedure room.

8. Seneca, S.C. — New Endoscopic Spinal Surgery Center Opens
A new endoscopic spinal surgery center has opened in Seneca, S.C. Synergy Spine Center is one of only a handful of national facilities offering outpatient full endoscopic spinal surgery.

9. Mesa, Ariz. — New ASC Included in Eye Care Center
A new 5,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center is included in an eye care center in Mesa, Ariz., opened by Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center. The Mesa Eye Care Center includes the ASC, a separate retina clinic and other features.

10. Erie, Pa. — Shriners Hospital for Children to Convert to ASC
Erie (Pa.) Shriners Hospital for Children is planning to move inpatient surgeries to other hospitals and convert to an ambulatory surgery center. The hospital announced its plans in Nov. 2009 and is still working to realize the transition.
