Four Maine Hospitals Chosen for Medicare Demonstration

Four hospitals in rural Maine have been selected to participate in a CMS demonstration aimed at increasing the hospitals’ capability to meet the needs of their service areas, according to hospital news release.

Requirements of the Rural Community Hospital Demonstration Program, which began in 2003, rendered Maine ineligible to participate at the time. However, the Affordable Care Act reauthorized the program for another five years and included a provision in the law that would allow small, rural hospitals that are too large to qualify as CAHs to participate. Six states including Maine are now participating in the rural hospital demonstration project.

To accomplish the goals of improved efficiency and clinical outcomes, hospitals in the demonstration are being asked to participate in initiatives that will enhance efficiency and quality as a condition of participation. The four Maine hospitals that were selected are Inland Hospital in Waterville, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta.
