Small Efforts Can Equal Big Rewards for ASCs

Creating a culture of savings is one of the most important operational "best practices" for ASCs, said Sarah Martin, regional vice president of operations for Meridian Surgical Partners, at the 9th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference in Chicago on June 9.

Ms. Martin said that a culture of savings starts with leadership, which sets the tone for the entire facility.

She also said ASCs should case cost with supply and salary costs because those costs can be controlled most easily within a facility.

Comparing reimbursement among insurance companies, creating par levels with your supply review and making sure all inventory is used can also lead to large savings, Martin said. Ms. Martin said was able to save her organization $4,000 on radiation badges by reviewing vendor contracts.

"You always have to be thinking, digging as reimbursement shrinks from insurance companies and the government," Ms. Martin said.
