Post-surgical revisit rates higher at low-volume ASCs

The odds of a patient with comorbidities revisiting an ASC within seven days of surgery rise at low-volume ASCs compared to high-volume ASCs, according to a Jan. 24 report published in JAMA Surgical

The study looked at 2,328 ASCs and 4,751 patient cases matched with 23,755 controls. Data was collected from Medicare claims between 2018 and 2019. The odds of a seven-day revisit were higher in ASCs that performed less than 50 procedures over a two-year period.

Patients with comorbidities were prone to revisits in low-volume ASCs. Among patients with multimorbidity who underwent orthopedic procedures in low-volume ASCs, the odds of revisit were 84% higher versus higher-volume centers.

For those with multimorbidities who underwent general surgery or other procedures, the odds of a revisit were 36% higher versus a higher-volume center.

The findings were not statistically significant in patients without comorbidities, according to the study.
