North Carolina has experienced an explosion of growth in outpatient surgery, becoming one of the most active states for ASCs in 2025.
Here are six new ASCs in North Carolina this year:
1. The North Carolina Local Government Commission approved Duke University Health System’s funding request to build an ASC in May. The system plans to expand its campus in Cary, N.C., with facilities that include a new medical office building, a freestanding emergency department, an ASC and specialty clinics.
2. Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health broke ground on a new outpatient surgical center in Leland, N.C. The facility will span 10,000 square feet and will include two operating rooms and two procedure rooms.
3. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in April for its $78 million outpatient surgery center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The 55,000-square-foot facility features 12 surgical suites, including eight operating rooms, two procedure rooms, a simulation operating room and a robotic-surgery training room.
4. Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health broke ground in April on a medical office building that will offer a range of specialty services. The 40,000-square-foot medical office building will offer primary care, cardiology, gastroenterology and a multi-specialty ASC.
5. Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health and Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health are collaborating on a $2 billion venture to build a 500-bed hospital, ASC, outpatient care center, medical office building and children’s behavioral health center. Construction on the facility is expected to begin in 2027 and last six years.
6. Winston Salem, N.C.-based Atrium Health Wake Forest (N.C.) Baptist received state approval in January to open a $25 million ASC. The center will include services for ophthalmology, otolaryngology and plastic surgery. The facility will include two minor procedure rooms, a Lasik procedure room, 20 recovery rooms and operating room support spaces. The center is scheduled to open in May 2026.
