10 updates to know on the ophthalmology industry

Here are 10 updates that ASC leaders need to know about the ophthalmology space that Becker's has reported on since Jan. 22:

1. Brassica Pharma voluntarily recalled some of its eye ointment products due to a lack of sterility assurance at the facility where they were produced. 

2. Artificial intelligence may outperform physicians when it comes to diagnosing and treating glaucoma, according to a study.

3. The Utah Senate is weighing a bill that would decrease the qualifications required to perform some laser eye procedures.

4. The total number of healthcare-focused private equity deals decreased by 16.2% in 2023, while vision-focused deals decreased dramatically.

5. The global ophthalmology market is expected to hit $94 billion by the end of the decade.

6. Hawaii was named the best state for eye health, while West Virginia was ranked last.

7. Ascendis Pharma teamed up with an investor syndicate that includes Frazier Life Sciences, RA Capital Management, venBio and HealthQuest Capital to launch ophthalmology company Eyconis. 

8. Colorado Ophthalmology Associates experienced a cyberattack that resulted in the encryption and loss of electronic medical record files.

9. Burnout among ophthalmologists decreased by 9% in the last year.

10. Biopharmaceutical company Coherus BioSciences agreed to divest its ophthalmology franchise, Cimerli, to pharmaceutical company Sandoz for $170 million.
