Gastroenterologist to know: Dr. Maria Abreu of University of Miami Health System/Miller School of Medicine

Maria T. Abreu, MD, is chief of the gastroenterology division at the University of Miami Health System/Miller School of Medicine. Previously, she served as director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and associate professor of medicine in the gastroenterology division at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Dr. Abreu’s clinical interests include inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, genetics of IBD, innate immunity in the GI tract and colon cancer in IBD. She has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and reviews.

Dr. Abreu earned her medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed her residency at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. She also fulfilled her gastroenterology fellowship at the University of California in Los Angeles.
