Brian Hafler, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology, and his team used a multistep process to sequence more than 20,000 cells and collaborated with Cambridge, Mass.-based MIT and Harvard University to compute the information into raw data, the report said. The new visualization let scientists pinpoint two cell types associated with age-related macular degeneration risk.
The findings yield potential to find new ways to treat the condition, the report said. Researchers believe the single-cell sequencing method Dr. Hafler and his team used could be used to identify new pathways to treatment.
