SurgCenter's outpatient joint program — 2019 growth + 3 keys to success

SurgCenter Development physicians have performed about 2,700 joint replacement procedures since April.

In June, the Towson, Md.-based management company recorded its 40,700th joint replacement, up from 38,000 in April.

Here's what you should know:

1. Earlier this year, SurgCenter secured a contract intended to expand Humana members' access to total knee, hip and shoulder replacements in ASCs.

2. As of April, 101 SurgCenter facilities in 21 states were performing joint replacements. They had a combined infection rate of 0.11 percent.

3. At SurgCenter's Indian Lake Surgery Center in Hendersonville, Tenn., surgeons have performed more than 350 outpatient total joints.

On the East Coast, SurgCenter's Harborside Surgery Center in National Harbor, Md. — which has offered outpatient hip and knee surgery since 2012 — completed 300-plus total joint replacements in 2018. Zero readmissions, hospital transfers or infections were reported

4. SurgCenter has also turned to Michigan for total joint expansion. The orthopedics-focused Alliance Surgery Center in Traverse City will be SurgCenter's fifth Michigan location when construction wraps up in November. In May, SurgCenter received preliminary approval to build an orthopedic surgery center in Boyne City.

5. SurgCenter shared three keys to total joint program success:

  • High-caliber surgeon partners
  • Facilities designed to accommodate joint replacements
  • Low infection and readmission rates
