University of Newcastle researchers discover link between how stress triggers immune changes in IBS — 3 study insights

New South Wales, Australia-based University of Newcastle researcher Jessica Bruce discovered a possible link between stress and immune changes that causes symptoms associated with irritable bowel syndrome to occur, the Newcastle Herald reports.

Here’s what you should know:

1. Ms. Bruce said functional gastrointestinal disorders have a dysregulation in their stress response. Increased levels of anxiety and stress don’t increase a hormone that regulates stress response.

2. Ms. Bruce said a potential increase in a gut protein is changing how immune proteins respond which is increasing gastrointestinal symptoms.

3. The researchers are hoping to develop therapies that could correct this.
