Sigmoidoscopy May Miss Up to 50% of Colon Polyps in Elderly Patients

Sigmoidoscopy alone for colon cancer screening in elderly patients may miss up to half of colon polyps, according to The Oncology Report.

A recent study of flexible sigmoidoscopy procedures in more than 120,000 patients found that 44 percent of polyps were missed in patients 60 to 69 years old and 50 percent in patients 70 to 79.

As patients age, polyps develop more proximally, making them harder to detect.
