The American Gastroenterological Association released new clinical guidelines, published in Gastroenterology, on the initial management of acute pancreatitis.
Here's what you should know:
1.The guidelines emphasize the importance of patient care within the first 48 to 72 hours of admission. The guidelines aim to reduce the variation between practices, while promoting high-value patient care.
2. In total eight recommendations were made with four of them being strong.
3. The strong recommendations are:
- AGA recommends early oral feedings, as tolerated, rather than limiting oral feedings
- AGA recommends enteral rather than parenteral nutrition
- AGA recommends cholecystectomy during the initial admission than when following discharge
- AGA recommends brief alcohol intervention during admission
