Long Beach Memorial joins ‘80% by 2018’ colorectal cancer initiative: 4 key notes

Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial joined the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable Initiative “80% by 2018. ” The initiative’s aim is to screen 80 percent of adults 50-years and older by 2018.

1. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the third most deadly. It is also one of the most preventable and treatable.

2. One in three adults does not get tested, according to national data.

3. MemorialCare’s Colorectal Surgery Program Medical Director Imad Shbeeb, MD, said colorectal cancer flies under the radar in terms of public awareness with many patients dismissing some of the early symptoms, when the disease is most preventable.

4. The hospital is encouraging the Long Beach community to undergo colorectal cancer screenings.
