GI physician leader to know: Dr. William Brugge of Massachusetts General Hospital

William R. Brugge, MD, is the director of the Pancreas Biliary Center and at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, also in Boston. He is the past director of gastrointestinal endoscopy at Massachusetts General. He is affiliated with the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr. Brugge has a professional interest pancreatic cancer, pancreatic cystic lesions, therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, esophageal cancer, Barrett’s esophagus and stromal cell tumors. His research centers on the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer as well as the development of a variety of endoscopic techniques to aspirate malignant and pre-malignant lesions of the pancreas.

Dr. Brugge’s work has been published in a number of prestigious journals, including Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Current Opinion in Gastroenterology.

Dr. Brugge earned his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed his residency and fellowship at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Aurora.
