GI physician leader to know: Dr. Stephen Bickston of Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine

Stephen J. Bickston, MD, is associate chair of the gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition division at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond. He also serves as director of the Digestive Health Center at VCU School of Medicine.

Dr. Bickston's clinical interests include integrated clinical care for inflammatory bowel disease. He has published 30 articles on IBD, authored dozens of textbook chapters and edited and authored the textbook "The Handbook of Inflammatory Bowel Disease," published in 2009. He is a member of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization, the IBD Working Group and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America's Clinical Research Alliance. He also serves on the executive board of the American Gastroenterological Association's Outcome Registry.

Dr. Bickston earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and completed both his residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
