GI physician leader to know: Dr. Daniel Podolsky of UT Southwestern Medical Center

Daniel K. Podolsky, MD, is president of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, a position he has held since September 2008. He holds the Philip O’Bryan Montgomery, Jr., M.D. Distinguished Presidential Chair in Academic Administration. He is also a professor of internal medicine and holds the Doris and Bryan Wildenthal Distinguished Chair in Medical Science. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association and American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Podolsky has previously served as the Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the chief of gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Chief Academic Officer of Partners HealthCare System, all located in Boston. He has authored more than 300 original research and review articles. He is the past editor-in-chief of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Podolsky’s research interests include epithelial cell biology, inflammatory bowel disease, innate immunity, mucosal biology and trefoil proteins. His laboratory has made contributions to understanding the mechanisms through which growth factors and cytokines regulate epithelial function. In 2009, he received the Julius Friedenwald Medal for Distinguished Service.

Dr. Podolsky earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
