GI physician leader to know: Dr. Atsushi Sakuraba of University of Chicago

Atsushi Sakuraba, MD, is an assistant professor of medicine in the gastroenterology section at University of Chicago Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Sakuraba focuses on inflammatory bowel disease. His research projects include advancing the effectiveness of combination therapy with an immunomodulator in anti-TNF treated IBD patients; optimization of novel biologic/immunomodulatory agents to treat refractory IBD; and analyzing the long term outcome of patients with microscopic colitis. His work has been published in numerous journals, including Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Dr. Sakuraba earned his medical degree at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan. He completed his residency at Keio University Hospital in Tokyo, where he completed a fellowship. He also completed a fellowship at University of Chicago Medicine.
