The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions has released a position statement outlining best practices for transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure in premature infants.
Published Aug. 18 in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, the statement provides recommendations on patient selection, procedural standards, operator training benchmarks and institutional infrastructure needs. It emphasizes team-based decision-making, complication prevention and structured follow-up to improve safety and outcomes.
The guidance follows the 2019 FDA approval of the first PDA occlusion device for infants as small as 700 grams, which has accelerated adoption of catheter-based closure over surgical ligation in many centers, according to an Aug. 18 news release from SCAI.
