Colorado Becomes Eighth State to Set Up Health Exchange

On Wednesday, Colorado became the eighth state to set up a health insurance exchange for people shopping for lower rates, a federal requirement under healthcare reform, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) signed the health exchange measure into law at St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colo. He said the exchange will give Colorado residents "more control [and] more options."

According to the report, Colorado is the only state to have put a health exchange into law through a divided Legislature. Several Republicans helped move the exchange measure through the House, but all Senate Republicans voted against the measure.

The new exchange law is the first step toward putting an exchange in place, according to the report. State health officials said an exchange would not be functional for individual and small-group shoppers until late 2013 or early 2014. The federal healthcare law mandates that states have exchanges by 2014. Otherwise, the government will set up an exchange for the state.
