Surgeons launch membership-based facility in New York City

Two plastic surgeons, Oren Tepper, MD, and Evan Garfein, MD, have opened Greenwich Street Surgical, a membership-based surgical facility in New York City.

The 6,000-square-foot center, developed by a healthcare real estate team with experience in hospitals and ASCs, features three operating rooms, private pre- and post-op bays, an anesthesiology team and concierge-style recovery services.

Many Manhattan surgeons struggle to access operating rooms that meet their standards for safety and efficiency, Dr. Tepper told Becker’s.

“Hospital ORs are costly, bureaucratic and difficult to schedule,” he said. “At the same time, building or leasing a private surgical suite in New York City is often financially prohibitive and administratively overwhelming. Greenwich Street Surgical was designed to solve that problem: a turnkey, AAAASF-accredited facility that gives surgeons access to hospital-grade safety in a boutique environment, without the burdens of ownership or overhead.”

The membership model offers surgeons priority scheduling, block time, administrative support and marketing resources without the need to invest in or manage their own facility.

According to Dr. Garfein, “traditional ownership or lease arrangements lock surgeons into high fixed costs, construction expenses and ongoing administrative burdens.”

By contrast, he said, Greenwich Street Surgical “flips that equation, giving surgeons access to fully equipped ORs, concierge-level staff, and patient amenities, with the flexibility to scale their usage up or down as their practice evolves.”

“Traditional ownership or long-term lease models lock surgeons into high fixed costs, construction expenses and ongoing administrative burdens,” Dr. Garfein told Becker’s. “Our membership model flips that equation, giving surgeons access to fully equipped ORs, concierge-level staff, and patient amenities, with the flexibility to scale their usage up or down as their practice evolves. The main tradeoff is that members don’t “own” the space, but for most, the benefits of flexibility, lower risk, and operational support far outweigh the limitations of ownership.”

The center handles all aspects of operations — including facility build-out, accreditation, staffing, scheduling, billing infrastructure and recovery accommodations — allowing surgeons to focus on clinical work.

“That means surgeons can walk in, operate and walk out,” Dr. Garfein said. “Their patients enjoy seamless pre- and post-op care, and their team doesn’t get bogged down in logistics.”
