GMO shuts down Aspergillus fungus in corn: 6 key notes

University of Arizona researchers Monica Schmidt, PhD, is studying how a genetically modified organism can control Aspergillus growth in corn, Farm Journal reports.

Here’s what you should know.

1. The U.S. tests its corn for Aspergillus and turns away over-contaminated produce, but internationally produce remains untested. Dr. Schmidt estimates some 4.5 billion people consume Aspergillus regularly.

2. This GMO shuts Aspergillus and prevents it from accumulating in corn.

3. Dr. Schmidt believes the GMO will make a difference in the U.S. and in the rest of the world.

4. People from undeveloped countries are 16 times to 32 times more likely to develop liver cancer after consuming Aspergillus.

5. Dr. Schmidt and researchers can silence aflatoxin genes in corn. The ear will still show powder spores on the surface, but the kernels remain uncontaminated.

6. Dr. Schmidt and colleagues are seeking funding to expand testing efforts. She predicts, in this regulatory environment, the corn could be available in 10 years to 20 years.
