Kovach Eye Institute 1st in Illinois to perform SMILE laser surgery

Elmhurst, Ill.-based Kovach Eye Institute is the first ophthalmology practice in the state to perform small incision lenticule extraction to correct nearsightedness, the Daily Herald reported Jan. 7.

The minimally invasive SMILE procedure, developed by optical systems manufacturer Zeiss, uses a computer-guided laser to remove a small piece of corneal tissue.
