Here are four key notes on the study:

1. In the uncontrolled pilot study, researchers found that participation in an MBI or relaxation response was associated with improved disease-specific measures, trait anxiety and pain catastrophizing in patients with IBS and IBD.

2. Nineteen IBS and 29 IBD patients were enrolled in an RR-based MBI intervention.

3. Trait Anxiety scores, IBS Quality of Life, IBS Symptom Severity Index and IBD Questionnaire scores from patients improved significantly for IBS and IBD patients, as did Pain Catastrophizing Scale scores for IBD.

4. Co-lead author Baden Kuo, MD, of the gastrointestinal unit in the Massachusetts General Hospital said these results pose exciting possibilities for further development and treatment in more patients with gastrointestinal illness.
