Here’s what you should know:
1. Researchers found Europeans consume between one and four drinks a day. This level of consumption increased risk for pancreatic, liver and gastric cancers. None of the 28 European Union states consumed less than one drink per day, per capita.
2. The European Union has the highest alcohol consumption in the world. Researchers believe 90 percent of the EU’s residents are unaware of a potential link between alcohol consumption and cancer.
3. UEG called for an awareness campaign aimed at educating the general public about excessive alcoholism and its link to cancer.
4. France is already being proactive about the issue. The government issued stricter marketing rules and regulated workplace drinking. As a result, both alcohol consumption and digestive cancer incidence rates decreased.
