GI physician to know: Dr. Firas Al-Kawas of Johns Hopkins Medicine

Firas H. Al-Kawas, MD, is the director of endoscopy at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., and a professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore. He previously served as chief of endoscopy at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., for 15 years. He is a fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology, American College of Physicians and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Dr. Al-Kawas’ clinical interests include Barrett’s esophagus, general gastroenterology and gastroesophageal cancer. He has received a number of awards during his career, including the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s Master Endoscopist award. He is an honorary member of the Syrian Society of Gastroenterology. He has published more than 120 papers and book chapters on topics in gastroenterology and endoscopy.

Dr. Al-Kawas earned his medical degree Damascus University in Syria. He completed his residency training at D.C. General Hospital in Washington D.C. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Washington D.C. VA Medical Center.
