GI physician leader to know: Dr. Jamal Ibdah of University of Missouri Health’s School of Medicine

Jamal Ibdah, MD, PhD, is director of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at University of Missouri Health’s School of Medicine in Columbia. He also serves as director of the gastroenterology fellowship program, professor of medical pharmacology and physiology and the Raymond E. and Vaona H. Peck Chair in Cancer Research. In addition, he is senior associate dean for research and director of the MU Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.

Dr. Ibdah is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. He has a professional interest in screening colonoscopy, gastroenterology and hepatology. His research interests include exploring the role of genetic and environmental alterations in mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation in development of fatty liver disease in pregnancy, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and insulin resistance as well as outcomes research in GI malignancies. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed publications such as The Journal of Pediatrics and Gastroenterology.

Dr. Ibdah earned his medical degree at the University of Jordan in Amman and completed his residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital/Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. He completed his GI/Liver fellowship at Barnes-Jewish Hospitals/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
