Here are five notes:

1. Surgical resection of complex polyps is linked to adverse events including longer hospital stays and higher costs than endoscopic resection.

2. In a Chicago-based Northwestern University study, researchers found adverse events in one-sixth of patients whose colorectal polyps were surgically resected, and a median length of stay of five days.

3. Head researcher, Rajesh N. Keswani, MD, said, “Given the safety and efficacy of endoscopic resection and the shared desire to provide efficient, value-based care, surgeons and endoscopists should work in conjunction to develop multidisciplinary treatment pathways for patients with complex colon polyps.”

4. A different study conducted by Northwestern researcher found despite EMR proving safe and effective, researchers observed residual adenomas on surveillance colonoscopy.

5. In the second study, researchers observed adverse events in EMR resection in 6.3 percent of cases.
