AGA bestows fellow-status on Dr. Uma Sundaram — 3 insights

The American Gastroenterological Association awarded Uma Sundaram, MD, fellow status. Dr. Sundaram is the vice dean of research at the Huntington, W.Va.-based Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, Huntington News reports.

What you should know:

1. An inflammatory bowel disease specialist, Dr. Sundaram received more than $35 million in research funding for his work on obesity, IBD, colon cancer, hepatitis C and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

2. He is currently leading several projects with grants from the National Institutes of Health, the DOD and the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, among others.

3. School of Medicine Dean Joseph Shapiro, MD, said, "This is an incredible accomplishment for a physician and a testament to the hard work Uma has invested in growing—not just his own areas of research—but the research enterprise of our school of medicine as a whole."
