10 statistics on GI physician compensation, benefits

Medscape  released its 2018 Medscape Gastroenterologist Compensation Report examining a variety of compensation-related factors throughout the industry.

Medscape collected responses from 20,329 physicians in total. Gastroenterologists who responded to the survey disclosed their compensation, average work week and time spent with patients, among others.

Here are 10 statistics on GI physician compensation.

1. Gastroenterologists make $408,000 annually, which is the fourth-highest reported salary among all specialties.

2. Salaries across gastroenterology increased 4 percent year over year.

3. Foreign-trained GI physicians make slightly more than U.S.-trained GI physicians — $414,000 and $405,000, respectively.

4. Two ethnicities — white and Asian — made up the majority of all GI physicians, with males particularly dominating both. Eighty-seven percent of all Asian gastroenterologists were male, while 88 percent of all white gastroenterologists were male. Other ethnicities were represented by too low a percentage for inclusion.

5. Self-employed GI physicians outearn employed GI physicians,with the former earning $424,000 and the latter earning $400,000. Despite that, 53 percent of GI physicians are employed by an institution.

6. The majority of GI physicians work full time, but of those part-time practitioners, 5 percent are male and 13 percent are female.

7. The top three pay benefits GI physicians receive over and above their annual salary are liability/malpractice coverage (75 percent), health insurance (72 percent) and dental insurance (57 percent).

8. Only 57 percent of GI physicians feel they're fairly compensated. The majority of GI physicians believe they should earn between 11 percent and 25 percent more.

9. Seventy-five percent of GI physicians accept insurance, 44 percent are on traditional fee-for-service plans and 24 percent are members of accountable care organizations.

10. GI physicians are leading the way in expected Merit-based Incentive Payment System participation, with 61 percent saying they'll participate in MIPs in someway.
