Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center 1st to perform minimally invasive aortic aneurysm treatment

A team of vascular surgeons from Columbus-based The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center were the first in the state to perform a minimally invasive treatment to repair aortic aneurysms involving visceral vessels in patients.

The surgeons used an investigational endovascular device to repair a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm Oct. 15. The patient only had three incisions and was hospitalized for six days. Traditional open surgery requires a large incision and a 10-14 day recover time.

The device was developed by W.L. Gore & Associates, and Ohio State is one of several hospitals currently testing the device.
