Here are five key notes:
1. OptumRx is UnitedHealth Group’s free-standing pharmacy care services business. The company manages more than 1 billion prescriptions per year. The partnership with Walgreens makes sense, as the drugstore is one of the largest chains in the United States and part of the Retail Pharmacy USA division of Walgreens Boot Alliance.
2. The partnership will provide eligible OptumRx members with a 90-day option to fill prescriptions at home delivery copay levels at any Walgreens. There are 8,200 Walgreens pharmacies nationwide.
3. Both companies designed the partnership to achieve higher treatment adherence rates and better patient outcomes. The program gives patients a choice on how they want to receive medications as well as 24/7 pharmacist availability.
4. As a result of the partnership, members are connected to clinical guidance for specific diseases, including chronic illness. The program also increases drug adherence.
5. The partnership will communicate healthcare data and analytics so members receive the most effective prescription drugs at the right cost.
6. The two companies expect to roll out the new pharmacy solution available to commercial clients implementing new 90-day prescription benefit designs beginning Jan. 1, 2017.
