Medical Eye Center surgeons to travel to Christmas Island on medical mission trip: 5 things to know

Medford, Ore.-based Medical Eye Center physicians are traveling to Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, a part of the Republic of Kiribati, to provide medical aid.

Here are five things to know:

1. The physicians will perform surgeries and provide treatment for eye diseases and conditions during the week-long mission.

2. MEC ophthalmologists Paul A. Jorrizo, MD, and Paul S. Imperia, MD, began this annual mission after visiting the island during a fishing trip.

3. This is the third mission trip to Christmas Island for Dr. Jorrizo and the second trip for Dr. Imperia.

4. The team expects to perform more than 120 surgeries.

5. A local physician will work with the team to conduct eye exams and perform eye surgeries on local island residents.
